We can today confirm that we shall be donating a brand new shield for the Walsall Football Club Player Of The Season Award.
Following discussions with the club we felt that the Bernard Johnston Memorial Trophy (image below) had become fragile, given it was first presented at the end of the 1977-78 season.
Some famous names have picked up the prestigious Bernard Johnston Trophy over the years including the likes of Adrian Viveash, Andy Butler and Jimmy Walker
Following the design change we have also decided to rename the award and from this season it will be known as - The Robert Sadler Shield.
The board agreed that it should be named after Bob Sadler - in recognition of the hard work and dedication he has given to the award over numerous years.
We are delighted to announce that we have been able to source a new shield which will be presented at the end of this season. Each player that is chosen as player of the year will receive a replica of the shield.
The Bernard Johnston Trophy will be engraved with last season's player of the year winner Andy Cook before retiring in the trophy cabinet at Walsall FC.
